Teeth Grinding / Bruxism

Teeth grinding or clenching can occurs due to an overactive jaw muscle. It can leave you with pain in your jaw as well as cause grinding down of your teeth over time.* This means expensive dentist bills!

We can help improve this by placing a series of small injections of muscle relaxer into your jaw muscle (called the masseter), which causes it to become less powerful and subsequently (hopefully!) relieve these issues.*

As a pleasant side effect, this can also improve the contours of your face, because those who clench/grind usually have a bulky jaw muscle and a squarer face. Treating the jaw muscle can reduce its size and give a sleeker, slimmer contour to your face.* For this reason, this treatment is also known as ‘jaw slimming’ injections.

What is Bruxism?

Bruxism is involuntary and excessive teeth grinding or jaw clenching. It is the result of an overactive masseter muscle – the facial muscle which attaches the lower jawbone and cheekbone. Teeth grinding mostly occurs while the patient is sleeping, but in some cases can happen throughout the day.

Bruxism is often triggered by stress and apart from jaw pain and wearing down of teeth, can lead to headaches, tooth sensitivity, difficulty chewing and change in face and jaw contour.

How can muscle relaxant injections help with Bruxism?

Muscle relaxants are injected into the masseter muscle to reduce the strength and activity of the muscle. Weakening of the masseter muscle also causes it to shrink over a period of time – this helps in reducing the squareness of the jaw and give the face a better contour.

A relaxed muscle helps in reducing clenching of teeth, thus preventing the wearing down of teeth and other associated damage. The treatment results last for up to 4-6 months, however, they vary from person to person.
